The knowledgeable team at Kingfisher Windows have recently been at it again, this time helping one home situated in Ikley, West Yorkshire make the most of its outside garden area by replacing an old elevated staircase with a stronger and more resistant metal alternative. While not a traditional window, door or conservatory installation, the finish product was a true testament to our team’s versatility, although new tilt & turn windows were also introduced.
Strong and resistant aluminium
When sitting down with the customer to discuss their ambitions, they originally wanted to simply replace the existing decking staircase which by its very design, isn’t really a material that is suitable for the location as it would have soon become slippy and potentially dangerous. We eventually agreed that an aluminium staircase would be more suitable, being aesthetically much more in-keeping and is more serviceable and long lasting.
Likewise, in order to gain a greater sense of both ventilation and light when swapping out the rear of the home’s windows, the homeowners opted for multiple sets of aluminium tilt & turn windows which would allow for configurable air entry whenever it gets hot. The customer had a desire to have very tall opening sashes, and these were the perfect fit.
Always allowing for easy garden access
The aluminium staircase was fitted with a barred barrier and railing system to always ensure easy access each time the homeowners wished to venture down. This was also a necessary design option implemented primarily for safety, with the highly strong and durable metal barrier ensuring that the likelihood of someone falling over will never be a frequent concern.
A challenging job the Kingfisher team were committed to getting right
Early in the process it was apparent that it would be quite a difficult build because access could only be gained through a single personnel door via the garage. The rear garden where the construction was built, is at the bottom of a steep wooded gradient which meant that we had soaking subsoil caused by ground water, causing considerable retaining wall and drainage issues.
We had to hand dig for the foundations and cut back into the garden which meant hand balling 5 skip loads of subsoil out through the same door and garage as the rear garden is effectively land locked. Through the combination of perseverance and common sense we were successful in overcoming the issue, creating a finished product that more than exceeded the customer’s expectations.
